Dear Friends and Fellow Laborers, Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong met King Bhumibol Adulyadej the first time in 1971. At that time, the king told him about a new project to educate the ethnic hill tribes that inhabited the highland border region of northern Thailand. These hill tribes grew opium and sold it to Chinese middle-men as their only cash crop. The king wanted to teach them to grow other crops, such as peaches and vegetables, to replace the opium they grew. This would be more profitable for the hill tribes and much less destructive to the upland forests and humanity as a whole. The king also wanted to give their children an education but had very few trained teachers.

We recently returned from a whirlwind tour of the U.S. Gloria and I were in Arizona, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and California. I have yet to catch my breath. I am getting older and trips like these are getting tougher. Thankfully, I have Gloria to help me, and so many of you were very kind in trying to help make the trip more comfortable. Dear Friends and Fellow Laborers, Friday, December 5th, was the 87th birth anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King of Thailand. In Thailand, December 5th is also celebrated as national Father’s Day. King Bhumibol has the distinction of being the longest reigning monarch in the world today, having ascended the throne on June 9, 1946. Queen Elizabeth II of England is the second longest reigning monarch.
