Bhumibol Adulyadej, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and HRH Princess Sirindhorn, left the Sirirat Hospital<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> where he has been under medical care since <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">September 2009<\/span>, to<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> travel by motorcade to the old capital of <\/span>Ayutthaya.\u00a0 The royal family traveled there to inspect damage from the recent flooding and to visit a special project the King initiated 6 years ago.\u00a0 They were greeted by thousands of Thai people along the road, waving Thai and Royal flags and shouting \u201cSongpracharearn\u201d which means, \u201cLong Live the King.\u201d<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The project he initiated at an old battlefield.\u00a0\u00a0 The king called the project, \u201c<em>Monkey Cheeks<\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201d and it is part of the numerous water management and flood control initiatives of the king. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">In figuring out ways to deal with the now yearly flooding of the central plains, he became inspired by watching a monkey stuff its cheeks full of food before returning to its perch to eat.\u00a0 He thought, \u201cIf the monkey can do that with food, why can\u2019t we do it with excess flood waters that are now beginning to cause so much damage?\u201d\u00a0 The idea was to allow pockets of rice land adjacent to the Chao Praya Riverto collect and store floodwater and then release it back into the river after the major floodwater receded.\u00a0 It was a novel idea by a king who is an engineer and expert in water management. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-8zfHUoDxdDQ\/T8ev_zkX32I\/AAAAAAAAAG0\/KS5vvRdxhAg\/s1600\/Queen_suriyothai0609.jpg\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> <\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<table that occurred during the Burma-Siam War of 1548.\u00a0 The Burmese had invaded Siam<span style=\"font-size: small;\">(now called <\/span>Thailand<span style=\"font-size: small;\">) and were intent on attacking the Capitol City of <\/span>Ayutthaya<span style=\"font-size: small;\">situated one hour\u2019s drive north of <\/span>Bangkok<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> on the <\/span>Chao Praya River<span style=\"font-size: small;\">.\u00a0 King Maha Chakkrapat of <\/span>Ayutthaya<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> rode his war elephant out to challenge the King of Burma accompanied by his Siamese foot soldiers.\u00a0 During the ensuing battle, King Maha Chakrapat\u2019s elephant stumbled and fell because of its wounds.\u00a0 The Burmese King saw a chance to kill the Siamese king while his elephant was down.\u00a0 Meanwhile, unknown to the King of Ayutthaya, his Queen Consort, Sri Suriyothai had disguised herself as a man and rode into the battle on a war elephant of her own. \u00a0She saw the Burmese king\u2019s attack on her husband and knew he was vulnerable and could easily be killed.\u00a0 To save him she immediately drove her war elephant between the Burmese king and her husband\u2019s downed elephant.\u00a0 During that age, warriors on elephant back fought using long spears with sharp blades at the end.\u00a0 Queen Suriyothai was struck and killed by a blow from the Burmese king\u2019s weapon. \u00a0\u00a0When she fell from her elephant, her helmet came off and her long flowing locks betrayed that she was a woman.\u00a0 When the Burmese king found out that he had killed a woman and a queen, he withdrew from the field.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Suriyothai is one of Thailand\u2019s greatest heroines and the theme of a romantic movie that released in 2001 called <em>The Legend of Suriyothai<\/em>.\u00a0 A momument to her bravery now stands at the site of the battle.\u00a0 The king and queen also visited this monument and laid garlands.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> Also, it was reported that the king is responding well to physical therapy and now able to walk a short distance unassisted.\u00a0 This is very good news to all of us.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br
